While browsing my Instagram about Siem Reap, I came across food photos of insects and tarantulas served beautifully. I checked the page and found out that there is a cafe in Siem Reap that served insects. After doing all my research, I found BUGS CAFE to be the place to try on our last day in Siem Reap. My friend didn't like the idea but I told him that it would be a great experience and it would be something to remember.
The resturant opens from 5:00 pm onwards.
The address is: 351 Thmey Village, Angkor Night Market Street, 351 Angkor Night Market St, Krong Siem Reap, Cambodia
When we arrived, a group tour occupied the 2nd floor which just shows how busy the place can be. So we decided to sit inside where it was also a bit cooler. I find the place really amazing and looks like a great place to hang out. It was clearly very popular with expats and tourists as well!
The Cafe itself is small but I enjoyed the warm and homey feeling of it. I also see more people prefer to sit outside. The staff were very accommodating and smiling all the time. I think they understood that not all are mentally prepared but very willing to try. I just think of the amount of protein you get from each cricket. Lol...
They have a nice selection of cocktails. I wanted a strong cocktail so I ordered a Long Island Tea while my friend ordered a Mojito. Served in a big glass, the taste of the cocktails was delicious and strong- one of the best Long Island Teas that I've tasted and the Mojito also tasted great! Just loved it!
Now, I was ready to check on the menu... I was excited because I had never been to a cafe like this. I don't think we have a place like this in Manila. That is the reason why I was very eager to try. My excitement was telling me to try the Tarantula Donuts for USD 8.00 but my mind was saying I was not ready for that yet! Lol....
So on our visit, I tried the Crickets and Silkworms Wok for USD 5.00 . You can also have the option if you want to make it spicy, depending on how you want it prepared. I chose spicy! Our food arrived and the way it was presented was amazing. It was hard to imagine that my dish had crickets and silkworms in it as it was delicious! The French owner also told us a little about each dish and the nutritional value of the insects.
You can still feel they what you are eating are insects but there is something about the way that they cooked it. It was really delicious! More to my surprise, I finished the whole thing!
My friend, ordered the Sweet Potatoes Cream and Bee Larvae Soup for USD 5.00 . The soup looked very inviting and I was wondering, where the bee larvae were. When he started stirring it up, they suddenly appeared from the bottom. He had his first spoon and he loved it. He said it tasted delicious as well and it tasted just like any other normal food out there. He also polished his soup in the end.
We were really impressed with Bugs Cafe. This restaurant really exceeded our expectations. We left the place feeling very satisfied with our food. The drinks were amazing. The staff was very friendly. We never really thought we would be able to eat insects, but the way they were cooked was top notch!
Big thumbs up to BUGS CAFE Team! And if you are reading this article and going to Siem Reap anytime soon, make sure to include this in your itinerary!
